Fraud Wireless Scam

Jun 27, 2025 | 1 Minute Read

Fraudsters, pretending to be from your wireless phone company, contact you because of a series of recent charges on your bill for new phones, accessories, and/or services that seemed unusual for you.  However, you won’t be able to see the charges on your bill because they caught them before it got there.  They may even text you in a way that looks like it came from the actual company, but they have spoofed the number.

When you confirm that you didn’t make these purchases, you may be asked to login to your Online Banking or for your bank account/credit card information so that they can refund you.

If you are contacted about possible fraudulent transactions on your account with your wireless service provider or any other company with whom you normally do business,

  • Verify the credibility of the claims by contacting the company through a known number (such as on your bill), official website, or other previously used methods. You may want to tell them you don’t have time to talk and hang up on unsolicited calls.
  • Don’t click any links as they may lead you to fake websites or download malware.
  • Don’t allow anyone to remote into your computer while you login to Online Banking.

Remember, if you have questions about a possible fraud situation or just an uneasy feeling about a phone call, text, email, or transaction, contact the Fraud Department at (605) 934-2500.
